BLUE MOUNTAINS

The iconic Blue Mountains is made up of 27 regional villages which includes Blackheath, Katoomba, Leura, and Mt. Victoria, with the heritage-listed region only a 90- minute drive north of Sydney.

Most of the famous towns are only about ten minutes apart and are adorned with lookouts, bush-walks and bike trails to see the mountains, waterfalls and waterholes.

The character of the Three Sisters changes throughout the day and stay open until 11 pm each night for a spectacular summer scene.

Scenic World in Katoomba is a must-see. Cable-cars carry guests across mountain peaks with vast views and a different perspective of the Three Sisters rock formation.  Far  below  are accessible rainforest boardwalks and the world’s steepest railway which was used by a coal mine in the late 1800s. It travels between the lush rainforest and up to the top at a 52° incline!

The nearby Blue Mountains Climbing School can customize an experience for the brave and not-so-brave (I am in the middle of both). They guide all age groups through abseiling and canyoning, and  even  slower  paced bushwalks.

Blue  Mountains  Adventure Company has e-bikes to ride down to Echo Point Lookout and beyond for unmatched views. For a walk, head across the Cliff Top Walk to the stunning Wentworth Falls. Nature at its best.

I stayed in the region’s oldest town of Mt. Victoria. The Victoria and Albert Guesthouse was built by Nicole Kidman’s Great-Great-Great  Grandmother, Mary Finn. At 156 years old, its beautifully preserved and feels brand new. Guests will enjoy sitting on the wrap-around balcony enjoying views of the Aussie landscape.

The exquisite lobby, library and dining rooms feel gracious and relaxing. There are up to five beds per room, an impressive restaurant, electric car chargers and live events on show.

The Mt Victoria train station maintains its historic appearance and is still in use today to get to and from Sydney twice a day.

Need a relaxing spa or pampering? The village of Leura can accommodate. It’s also a great place to shop with Zoe Clare, a boutique that specializes in Aussie  brands,  worth  a  visit.  Follow  the  smell  of  chocolate downhill to Josophan’s Fine Chocolates for incredible treats and to watch the artisans at work.

Many of you will remember the terrible bushfires over the years in the Blue Mountains. The town of Blackheath has consistently been one of the hard est hit. Here you’ll find a Heritage Centre for history of the area but it’s also the best place for a sunset over the Grand Canyon.

My wonderful visit ended with a man who gave me a rose and a smile. He was as charming as the Blue Mountains themselves. I will be back!
