KISS & MAKE UP
Alex and Mia Fevola
By Ros Reines
Former model turned beauty maven, Alex Fevola and her brand, Runway Room, are helping Australian women to get their glow on. The Fevola signature is the locked-in radiance of the Runway bases, along with the sheer brilliance of the brand’s curated blushes and translucent powders. It’s a polished look for effortless beauty that speaks to our national lifestyle.
“With Runway Room, I’ve tried to tick all the boxes while maintaining an affordable price point,” says the mother of four. “I wanted to make it accessible, so I’ve tried to keep it uncomplicated, so anyone can get the best results,” she explains.
“The brand ethos is that it’s ageless. My older daughters wear our products and so does my mother and so do I. Our foundation is a weightless formula that’s really flattering for more mature skin but it’s also stunning on young complexions.”
“Mum always gets it right,” says a proud Mia Fevola , 25 and the eldest of her four daughters. Like her mother, Mia is a high achiever, who works as a Runway Room senior makeup artist in the brand’s glitzy Armadale salon on the acclaimed High Street shopping street. They also have a store on the Main Street in Sorrento on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Mia is also an ambassador for Runway Room and her substantial social media following has brought thousands of new devotees to the brand. Plus, she has two university degrees and is now going for her Honours in Psychology.
A recent entrant on Dancing With The Stars, she’s now also in demand as a television personality, but remains grounded and focused on the business.
“Mum and I don’t really have differences of opinion,” she comments. I think we work very well together. We don’t have conflicts, we like to hear each other out and learn from each other,” Mia explains.
Neither of the two are exactly pushovers. Consider this: As a young mother, Alex had to deal with the sudden death of her first husband (Mia’s father) and then her very public marriage to AFL footy legend turned radio personality, Brendan Fevola, with whom she has three more daughters – Leni, 19, Lulu,15 and six-year old Tobi.
Alex ignores all the media gossip and saves her energy for her business. She believes that the key to Runway Room’s success is always keeping herself up to date.
“I listen to all my daughters, especially my 15-year-old, my 19-year old and my 25-year old. They all have their own style and the things they love.
“I think one mistake we make as we get older, is to think we know it all. But the industry is constantly evolving and changing. So I really take their observations on board. They might suggest another brand’s product, so I’ll investigate it. I am very lucky to receive that feedback from them”.
Runway Room is currently experiencing a growth spurt, after launching in Myer – a partnership that’s flourishing. They manufacture all of their products in Victoria and South Australia.
There was a similar growth pattern following the launch of her 2022 illuminating memoir, Silver Linings- A Journey to Happiness, which detailed some of the many challenges that she has faced throughout her life. Suddenly, there was a `beauty queen’ who was authentic and relatable. “When I was writing it, I thought I might have gone over-the-top as there were so many difficult experiences that I had to get through but at least there was a happy ending,” she says. “I feel so much gratitude for the life that I’ve led. It hasn’t been easy but it has shaped me as a person and helped me to appreciate the good times. I’ve seen worse days and I know what those days look like. So, I’ve learnt first-hand not to sweat the small stuff and to put everything into perspective,” she remarks.
Runway Room is also constantly evolving. 2026 will see the launch of the revolutionary Liquid Blush, which has been two years in the making. They already sell their locally made products to overseas customers.
“A lot of brands have their products pre-made and just slap their label on it but ours are developed,” she points out. They’re unique and I also look closely at the packaging.”
In the meantime, with four daughters still living under the one roof with Alex and Brendan, there may even be a Kardashian-style reality show in the offing.
“We have been asked multiple times to do a reality show. Now that the kids are getting older it’s something that we might consider,” she reveals.
After all, it’s guaranteed that with Fevola family, there would never be a dull moment. If there is, they would just add blush.
