LOVE A GETAWAY

HOTEL NO - MELBOURNE

Even as it approaches its 8th birthday in September, HOTEL NO remains one of Melbourne’s and Australia’s best kept accommodation secrets.

The brainchild of entrepreneur James Fry, HOTEL NO is one of the most unique experiences this country has to ofer.

On a rooftop in iconic Flinders Lane in the CBD you will find six 1970’s silver Airstreams that have been converted into deluxe suites.

And, car parking is free, certainly a rarity but for good reason.

The roof of the building that HOTEL NO is located on is Fry’s car park. Yes, the car park owner is also James Fry.

Fry came up with the quirky concept after looking at everything from cinemas to swimming pools, in order to utilise the space. After dreaming up the idea, he travelled through many Airstream and holiday parks throughout Santa Barbara on the west coast of America, and across California. It was then he decided that the iconic 31-foot Airstreams would be the ideal cabins to recreate at home.

He bought six of them, shipped them over to Melbourne and completely gutted and painstakingly redesigned and modernised them to create a stunning night (or nights) out.

Once all were sparkling and new, the Airstreams literally closed the busy Flinders Lane and were craned onto the roof top.

Five Airstreams are pretty much the same, but the 6th one “has benefits”, including prime position on the corner of the roof top with a private deck over the street and an outdoor hot tub. It is something else.

The roof top is flanked by office buildings and the concrete walls have been painted fluorescent pink by local artists, which sees the Airstreams, (starting at $299 a night during the week), glisten in the sun.

Each Airstream has a queen size bed, heating and cooling, a fully plumbed ensuite with shower and toilet (this is NOT camping) with premium bathroom products, and in fact, Fry lowered the floors of the Airstreams when he rebuilt them, to give more space for tall people to fit in the shower! (As a 6ft 5 individual, I was thrilled)

There is a complementary mini bar that showcases the best in Victorian products including beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks, chocolates and nibbles so enjoy!

Also discover the permanent rooftop marquee where guests may play games or relax and drink in the view, along with cocktails and nibbles. This space is available for events and has proved a popular location for engagement parties and weddings.

But there is no in room dining, concierge or reception here – the whole premise of HOTEL NO is to get out and explore what the cultural capital of Melbourne has to offer.

Enjoy vouchers for Holey Moley Golf, Strike Bowling, and of course, for the exciting local restaurants and bars.

Entry is via smartphone and there is a 24-hour contact number for assistance. So, don’t expect a bell boy to welcome you. This is a very DIY luxury experience.

However one entity was unhappy about the HOTEL NO’s offerings.

When it launched in 2016, HOTEL NO was called NOTEL which for Fry was to highlight that his business was “not a hotel” but rather an unbelievable guest experience in the centre of the CBD.

But he was forced to rebrand after the global NOVOTEL chain took legal action saying the names were too similar and “would be likely to deceive or cause confusion.”

Unable to take on “the big boys” and representing himself in court in Canberra because of significant legal bills, he finally conceded and changed the name to save himself more money.

While he may have lost the legal battle, he won the publicity fight – suddenly everyone knew about HOTEL NO.

Despite the tough economic conditions, Fry has very solid bookings particularly on weekends. So, plan ahead. There couldn’t be a better winter getaway.

What about HOTEL YES?
